FELONIES

• John R. Karls, 47, Monroe, pleaded no contest Friday, Nov. 30, to charges that he was growing psilocybin mushrooms in Mason jars in a basement in the 1200 block of 9th Street in Monroe. He is sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to undergo mental health treatment and alcohol/drug counseling. The hallucinogenic mushrooms were discovered in his home in February 2011, when officers executed a search warrant related to federal charges against Karls of stalking.

• Jason Robert Mitchell Sweet, 20, Monroe, pleaded guilty Monday, Dec. 3, to revoking his probation on previous charges and was sentenced to two years in prison and one year of extended supervision. Court records indicate in July Sweet was found in the possession of a stolen Nintendo Wii game console and was using marijuana and Fentanyl patches, a powerful narcotic painkiller, all in violation of his probation. He also hadn't gotten a job, as he promised as a condition of his probation. The original charges stem from an incident in February 2011, when Sweet resisted an officer and was found with almost 30 grams of marijuana and a set of brass knuckles.

• Jason R. Quintero, 39, Monticello, was charged Monday, Dec. 10, with a Class G felony count of receiving stolen property and two misdemeanor counts of bail jumping. Court records indicate Quintero knowingly and intentionally concealed a stolen 14-carat gold diamond ring worth $14,000 at a residence on Oak Ridge Avenue in Monticello, and by doing so broke bond on a previous charge. He also allegedly broke bond by drinking alcohol. On Tuesday, Dec. 11, he signed a $4,500 signature bond and $500 cash bond. His preliminary hearing is Dec. 17.

• Daniel Glenn Benkert, 26, Albany, was charged Tuesday, Dec. 11, with a felony count of strangulation and suffocation and misdemeanor counts of making threats or being obscene via computer message, unlawful phone use, disorderly conduct, battery and possession of drug paraphernalia. Court records allege on Dec. 8 he sent lewd, intimidating texts to a woman and called her and threatened to beat her up. Court records further indicate he pushed and shoved the same woman at a residence on 2nd Street in Albany, repeatedly banged her head on the floor and attempted to strangle her. Officers also report finding Benkert with a metal Beatles lunchbox containing two glass pot pipes, an ashtray with seeds, a metal grinder and three "homemade smoking devices." His signature bond is set at $2,000, with the conditions that he not drink or have contact with the victim.

MISDEMEANORS

• Austin D. Flood, 17, Albany, was charged Friday, Dec. 7, with two Class A misdemeanor counts of theft. Court records indicate he stole two iPods in mid-November from the locker room at Albany High School, 500 5th St. His signature bond was set at $1000 on Monday, Dec. 10. His next court appearance is Jan. 22.
