BRODHEAD - Arnold E. Johnson, at the age of 85, passed away on July 11, 2014 in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 28th, 1928 in his home in Pecatonica, IL to Oscar and Ethel (Eckburg) Johnson. He married the love of his life, Joan H. Carlson, on a beautiful afternoon, August 28th, 1954, in Rockton, IL.
Arnold was a member of the U.S. Army, where he reached the rank of sergeant and served 2 years in the Korean War. Following his service, he worked briefly as a carpenter. Arnold and Joan purchased a farm in Avon, WI in 1956. They were at this farm for 20 years. In 1977 they purchased their current farm in Brodhead, WI where they then farmed for another 36 years. Last year Arnold was still planting beans and corn in his beloved tractor and combining in the fall. Arnold enjoyed camping, traveling, going out to eat, dancing, playing cards, playing Sudoku, and spending time with family and friends. Arnold was a member of the 196th Field Artillery Battalion, American Legion, Moose Lodge, and the Brodhead United Methodist Church.
Arnold is survived by his wife Joan; children, Rodney (Betty) Johnson, Susan Dodge, Randy (Kim) Johnson, all of Brodhead, Roger (Cheri) Johnson, Juda, WI; a brother, Frank (Judy) Johnson, Pecatonica, IL; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Nancy, and a son-in-law Mike.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the United Methodist Church, Brodhead, WI with Pastor Krystal Goodger officiating. Burial will be in the Durand Cemetery, Durand, IL. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI. A memorial fund will be established.
