MONROE - Albert H. Deppeler, well known Green County Cheesemaker and Forester, age 84, died July 12, 2008, at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born September 17, 1923 in Green County, Wisconsin, the son of Fred and Alice Ingold Deppeler. He married Marion Marty, on February 2, 1947 at St. John's United Church of Christ and they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in February 2008.
Albert grew up at the Pine Bluff Cheese Factory in Brodhead, graduated from Monticello High School and attended Colorado School of Mines and University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Albert was 16 when he went to work at the Wyss Cheese Factory, now the Chalet Cheese Co-op located between Monroe and Monticello. During World War II, Albert served in the Army Infantry in Europe until his discharge in 1946.
He spent 50 years at the Chalet Cheese Factory, which is the only factory today making Limburger cheese. He was also known as a Master Cheesemaker in the development of Baby Swiss. Albert owned and operated the Deppeler Cheese Factory in Clarno Township and was the manager at the Chalet Factory. He retired from cheesemaking in 1997 and devoted his energies in Timber Management and Development. He was an outstanding tree farmer and sawmill operator. Albert established the Green County Forestry Education Center and donated 20 acres of woods to the center. He had a passion for helping and teaching young people, especially 4-H groups. He believed in hard work and education. Albert served on the Green County Fair Board, judged wood-working for many years, was active in the Monticello Historical Society and was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.
Albert is survived by his wife, Marion, Monroe; a sister, Wilhelmina Rabe, Clarno Township; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Fred and Lloyd; a brother and sister in infancy; and a foster son, Ronald Ginner.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ with Rev. Gretchen Sylvester officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Albert's name.
