DAVIS, Ill. — A Davis man is dead following a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning.

At approximately 5:43 a.m. on March 30, Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the area of N. Davis Road approximately 1/2 mile north of Walnut Grove Road in rural Davis for a report of a traffic accident.

Upon arrival, it was determined that both vehicles involved in the crash rolled over, and the driver of one of them, Daniel Fry, 51 of Davis, Ill., was ejected and located in a field on the east side of Davis Road. Davis Fire Protection District personnel immediately began life-saving measures, but he died at the scene. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the other vehicle, Darion Wheeler, 19, of Freeport, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital by ambulance. He was eventually transferred by helicopter to a different hospital for a higher level of care.

The results of the preliminary investigation indicate that a southbound vehicle, driven by Wheeler, crossed the roadway center line and collided head-on with Fry’s vehicle which was northbound on Davis Road. Driving while impaired is believed to be a factor in this traffic crash and criminal charges are possible following a review of the completed investigation by the Stephenson County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Assisting the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were Davis Fire Protection District, the Stephenson County Coroner’s Office, and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
