MONROE — A Brooklyn teen may plead guilty and face sentencing on Friday, Sept. 1, in Green County Circuit Court, following a one-car crash nearly a year ago in which the vehicle may have been going as fast as 113 mph on rural county roads.
When the black pickup careened out of control and crashed on the night of Dec. 4, 2022, five people were injured and the defendant reportedly ran from the scene in the N7000 block of Attica Rd, in the Town of Albany.
That alleged driver Zachary T. Kraabel, 19, is charged with Second-degree recklessly endangering safety, and four counts, including one felony, of reckless driving/cause bodily harm. He was scheduled for a plea/sentencing hearing Friday before Circuit Judge Thomas Vale.
Though he was not immediately charged with driving under the influence, likely because he fled the crash scene, police said in a criminal complaint that they suspect that alcohol played a role. A tow-truck driver called to the scene reportedly found evidence of that.
“…while walking into the ditch, the truck driver located a bottle of Tito’s vodka near the driver’s door,” the complaint said. “The bottle had a cap on it but was only approximately 3/4 of the way full…”
Kraabel’s mother called the sheriff’s department, and he surrendered to authorities a day after the actual crash on Dec. 5, police said. He also was cited for failure to notify police of an accident, according to court records.
Just before losing control of the car, passengers in the vehicle reportedly urged him to slow down.
The recklessly endangering safety charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. One count of felony Reckless Driving-Cause Great Bodily Harm has a maximum potential penalty of 3.5 years in state prison.
In addition to Green County Sheriff’s deputies, several other area agencies responded to the crash scene, including Albany EMS, Albany Fire, Belleville EMS, and Brooklyn EMS.
