ALBANY - Members of the Garden Planning Committee and Garden Program Partners will begin preparing the soil at the new community garden site with a groundbreaking at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
The event is the first step in preparing the entire garden site for spring planting in April or May of 2013. The garden site is located along Summit Street, just south of 7th Street.
Dr. Steve Guenther, district administrator of the Albany School District, will welcome the groundbreaking participants, and he will be joined by Jeff Gibbons from the Albany Food Pantry, Ro Ann Warden from the Green County Health Department, Tom Nelson representing the Green County Health Community Coalition, and Albany Village President Larry Hansen.
Other project partners include Albany Area Churches, Green County Healthy Kids Healthy County Coalition, Monroe Clinic, Blackhawk Technical College, Village of Albany, SW Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, and SWCAP. All of these organizations are involved in developing healthy food programs and food education programs for Green County residents.
The Albany Community Garden Program will develop a community garden to grow fresh produce and develop a food education program at the Albany School. The program will use Albany School technical resources and resources that are provided by the partners to develop and present educational programs on food preparation; food preservation, which includes canning, drying and freezing; and food growing techniques.
The project is hosted by the Albany Sustainable Agriculture Education Center at the Albany School. The Albany Sustainable Agriculture Education Center is a volunteer organization. Membership is open to all school district area residents and Green County residents interested in helping their neighbors, learning gardening techniques, and sharing their time and talent with others.
