BRODHEAD — A violent, one-car crash into a building early Monday morning left one unidentified victim dead.
It happened just after midnight on Sept. 23 when the Green County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call indicating a fire near a building at the intersection of Wis. 81 and County GG, about two miles south of Brodhead, authorities said.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene.
“Preliminary investigation determined a sport utility vehicle was westbound on State Hwy 81 when it failed to stop at the stop sign,” said a statement on the crash from the sheriff’s office. “The vehicle traveled through the intersection where it collided with an embankment causing it to go airborne.”
Next, the SUV smashed into several safety barrels filled with sand and “then traveled through a building on the property. The vehicle came to a rest where it was located on fire by responding officers.”
Once the fire was out, deputies found a single, vehicle occupant — an as-yet, unidentified male — dead.
No one else was injured in the incident. Deputies were assisted on scene by Brodhead Fire Department, Brodhead EMS, WI State Patrol, Beloit Police Dept., and the Green County Coroner’s Office.
The crash marks the county’s second traffic fatality in 2024, officials said.
