Breaking: Vehicle vs. pole crash causing power outage
Breaking

MONROE — A fiery vehicle vs. power pole crash just outside Monroe midday Wednesday snapped the pole in half and is causing a power outage that officials expect to last the rest of the afternoon.

Bethel Road is closed between Bloom Lane and 4th Avenue West while Alliant Energy works to repair the pole and restore power, said Green County Chief Deputy Tom Moczynski.

As of 3 p.m., he expected Alliant to be working on the outage for several more hours.

About 750 customers are without power, according to Alliant Energy's online power outage map.

The accident that caused the outage was reported at 12:43 p.m. in the N2400 block of Bethel Road, just west of the city.

"We got actually multiple 911 calls on it," Moczynski said.

The vehicle went off the road and struck the pole.

"It snapped it in half," Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits said. Then, "there's a fuse on the pole that caught on fire."

Firefighters responded to put out the fire. No injuries were reported from the crash or fire.

The damaged pole is "very important" to getting power to customers in a big area west of Monroe, Smits said.
