MONROE - A Monroe High School support staff employee was arrested and charged on multiple counts of child sexual assault on June 12. He is set to be arraigned in court today, June 13.

Andrew Swanston was arrested for First Degree Child Sexual Assault-Intercourse with Person Under 12, and First Degree Child Sexual Contact or Intercourse with a Person/Child Under 13, both Class "B" felonies.

He was set to appear for an initial appearance in court before Judge Faun Marie Phillipson at 1:15 p.m. on June 13 in Green County Circuit Court Branch 1.

"Mr. Swanston has been employed in the School District of Monroe since November 2021 as a Special Education Support Staff in our high school," Rodney Figueroa, district superintendent, wrote in a statement. "He is currently not working in our District. We are aware he was arrested on June 12 and will be arraigned on June 13. The charges are not school related. The District will always act in the best interest and safety of our children."

Contacted by phone, Figueroa said that had school been in session, Swanston would have been put on immediate leave. Swanston, like all support staff, are hourly and year-to-year employees.
