Big hearts, and soon a bigger place

MONROE - Community Living Home Options isn't a senior home - it's a home for seniors.

There's a difference.

Owner Elizabeth Flood said seniors live together, eat homemade meals together and share a commons area. They each have their own bedroom and bathroom, but most of the time they spend together.

"We have activities like shopping and playing cards," Flood said. "We're like a family."

Flood views the residents as an extended family and they keep an eye on each other. Social interaction is important to them and their well-being, she said.

"It's a lot more personal here. They receive one-on-one care," she said.

The seniors grow close to her and she has become fond of them.

"I've had some refer to me as their granddaughter," she smiles.

Her closeness with the residents can take an emotional toll, she said. There have been three residents who have died since she opened the home. Like all of the residents, they were special to her and she finds it difficult to talk about how much they meant to her.

She enjoys helping them and providing a place for them to live, she added.

She founded Caring Hearts in 1990 and has never regretted her career choice. In August 2007, Flood decided to open the facility, located at 316 Third Ave. It was something she always wanted to do.

The home is available for seniors, developmentally disabled and physically disabled adults over the age of 18.

There are three people living at the home but there's room for one more, she said. She recently purchased a home across the street. She plans a grand opening from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 7. The new facility will allow an additional 10 residents to feel at home, even if they are away from home.

More information about residencies at the new home is available by calling Flood at 329-4991.
