MONROE - Applications for the 2012-13 Green County Leaders Program (GCL) are now being accepted.

Green County Development Corporation, the University of Wisconsin-Extension Green County and other partners, such as Blackhawk Technical College, sponsor the Green County Leaders program. Now in its 11th year, GCL is an educational program in which individuals can practice leadership skills, deepen their understanding of community issues and prepare for leadership roles.

The purpose of the program is to prepare individuals from diverse segments of the Green County region to work together to establish an active, visionary, community leadership network and to create a collaborative environment with increased citizen participation and communities working together to leverage the resources, experience and expertise for the benefit of our communities, community-based organizations, and county.

GCL is seeking individuals who are:

n Passionate about strengthening community and civic awareness, commitment and involvement.

n Interested in their community and committed to making a difference.

n Open-minded and willing to take risks.

n Motivated and interested in new learning, self-discovery, community exposure and networking.

n Interested in opportunities for advancement into leadership positions within their own organization, which may in turn play a significant role in the community.

n Individuals with a commitment to live and/or work in Green County.

Brochures and applications for the program are available at the GCDC office located at the Green County Courthouse, 1016 16th Ave., or the Green County UW-Extension, 2841 6th St. Anyone interested in the program is encouraged to fill out an application and there are no prerequisites. A limited number of scholarships are available. Applications are due no later than Wednesday, July 25.

The program begins with an orientation at the end of August and continues one day per month, September through May. Classes are generally held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the second Wednesday of each month. Program days are dedicated to both personal leadership development and community orientation, led by a variety of trainers, facilitators and community leaders. Program advisors are GCDC Executive Director Anna Schramke, Community Leader Kent Anderson and the UWEX Community Development Educator Cara Carper.

More than 200 people in the Green County area have graduated from the program since the first class was held in 2002. Enrollment is limited to approximately 20 students each year.
