After hang up, phone system is back online

MONROE - The Monroe School District phone system was up and running as of about 1 p.m. Thursday.

Monroe Superintendent Larry Brown said two repairs fixed part of the problem, but a third step was required.

"Actually we (were) waiting for another part that will firm it all up," he said.

The school district continued to have problems with its phone system Wednesday and Thursday.

Brown said the phone systems at the elementary schools were not working, but he hoped the problem would be resolved by the end of the day, Wednesday.

Brown said workers discovered a part in the phone system Wednesday, which needed to be replaced. He said the part was being sent to the district.

All phone lines were shut down Wednesday afternoon to replace the part, he said.

Brown said analog phones were placed at the schools to be used in case of an emergency.

The phone system stopped working Monday afternoon. Workers from TDS determined a power source failed somewhere in the system. An electrical part might have been old and stopped working, Brown said, speculating.

The breakdown caused problems for parents who tried to call the district to report absences or to contact their children during school hours.

A note on the district's Web site explained the district had technical difficulties and that TDS was working on the problem.

Brown said children who needed to call home due to illness were able to use cellular phones. All the administrators have cell phones, he said, so the schools were never completely without the ability to communicate with parents.
