MONROE - Monroe students improved in three areas of the ACT test from 2009 to 2010, according to Cory Hirsbrunner, director of instruction at the Monroe school district.
In 2010, Monroe students scored 21.8 in the English section of the exam; 22.8 in the math section; and 23.7 in the reading section of the test. That's in comparison to scores of 21.7, 22.5 and 23.2, respectively, in the three sections of the test in 2009.
Monroe students' scores declined in the science section of the test from 22.5 in 2009 to 22.4.
Hirsbrunner said the slight drop was a result of a fewer number of students who took the ACT test from the district's virtual school. Test results from virtual school students were lower than the scores from Monroe High School students.
Hirsbrunner said the school district has high expectations for its students and said the district is working to help students continue to increase their test scores in science.
In all four sections of the test, Monroe students scored higher than the state averages. In the composite score, or total score, Monroe also scored higher than the state average. The composite score for the state was 22.1. Monroe's composite score was 22.8
"Our focus is to increase the number of students leaving high school ready for college or work," Hirsbrunner said. "We want our students ready to succeed in their first-year college courses or in whatever they decide to do after high school, and it's our job to prepare them for success."
