MONTICELLO - Two people were injured in a five-vehicle accident at about 4:30 p.m. Friday on Wisconsin 69 at Wittenwyler Road.

Deputies report a vehicle driven by Tonya K. Briggs, 37, Monroe, was stopped in the southbound lane waiting for traffic to pass so she could turn left onto Wittenwyler Road. A vehicle behind Briggs, driven by George W. Hughes, 51, Monticello, was also waiting to turn left. A third vehicle, driven by Ryan D. Timm, 23, Monroe, rear-ended Hughes' vehicle, which then hit Briggs' vehicle. Hughes' vehicle was pushed into the northbound lane and was hit by a vehicle driven by Lee A. Schwartz, 36, Pecatonica, Ill. A second northbound vehicle, driven by JoAnn T. Tourdot, 53, Belleville, also hit Hughes' vehicle.

Hughes was taken to the Monroe Clinic for injuries. Timm was treated at the scene. An infant in Schwartz's vehicle was taken to the Monroe Clinic as a precautionary measure.

Timm told deputies he looked down for his cellular phone because he thought it was ringing before his vehicle hit Hughes' vehicle. He was cited for inattentive driving.

Vehicles driven by Hughes, Timm and Schwartz received extensive damage and were towed. Tourdot's vehicle received moderate damage. Brigg's vehicle received minor damage.
