MONROE - People with chronic health issues can learn tools to improve their quality of life through an upcoming workshop called "Living Well with Chronic Conditions."
There are two workshops that will meet for six weeks from 1 to 3:30 p.m. One will begin Tuesday, March 20 and meet every Tuesday until April 17 at the Brodhead Public Library. The other will begin on Wednesday, April 11 and meet every Wednesday until May 16.
Created at Stanford University, the workshop is designed for people who have one or more chronic condition. The workshop is designed for those living with conditions like arthritis, hearing problems, asthma, stroke, pain, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, emphysema and cancer. Participants are encouraged to take control of their situation through:
n Symptom management
n Dealing with anger, depression, and other emotions
n Goal-setting and problem-solving
n Improving nutrition and developing a suitable exercise program
n Medication management
n Breathing exercises and managing stress
n Communicating with family, friends, and health care professionals
All participants will receive a copy of a consumer handbook, "Living a Healthy Life with a Chronic Condition" to use during the six weeks of class. To keep the text book, there is a $15 charge.
