MONROE - The Green County Veterans Memorial Park continues its work with its Vietnam Huey helicopter.
Karen Ayres of Brodhead inquired about the history on the 513 Huey through the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association magazine. Her husband, Larry Ayres, serves as president of Green County Veterans Memorial Park in Monroe and is a member of VHPA.
The report that she received included a listing of crew members, which lead her to find John Ulsh of South Carolina. Ulsh flew the same helicopter during his time in the service in 1966.
Since January, the Ayreses have been in contact with Ulsh, updating him on the work of GCVMP and with the Huey's restoration. Ulsh traveled to Wisconsin last month to sit in the Huey one last time in the helicopter's current storage unit, Helicopter Specialties Inc. of Janesville, before its installed in Monroe.
Ulsh said when he left Vietnam, he left behind his 513 Huey which received devastating enemy fire and was no longer able to fly. He was shocked to learn that his Huey not only survived but was now being restored in Wisconsin.
The group plans to install the Huey in the park for a dedication at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in honor of Veterans Day, weather permitting. The park is located on the corner of County N and Wisconsin 81 in Pleasant View Park, Monroe. For more information go to www.greencountyveterans.org or visit the group on Facebook.
