Senior center plans classes and events
MONROE — The Behring Senior Center has numerous activities and classes planned. Arrangements to participate can be made by calling the senior center at 325-3173 or stop at the center reception desk. Participants must pre-register for all programs, including free ones, so staff will know how many will be attending. All classes and activities are for people 55 and older.
Classes
♦ A quilting class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting Oct. 9, Oct. 16, Oct. 23, and Oct. 30. Learn how to change simple blocks into new blocks by making a few cuts. Tereesa Schroeder will be the instructor. Limit of 15 students.
♦ How to Sell Online will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 12. This course will cover how to sell household goods and other items online. Robin McLeish is the instructor.
♦ Oil Painting with Nina will be from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 18. Learn the rub-out method with oil paints by painting a big basket of red apples, perfect for fall. The cost includes most supplies.
♦ Learn to have a basic conversation in German from 10:30 a.m. to noon from Oct. 24 to Nov. 19 three times per week. Classes are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Come join this class with instructor Richard Benesh.
♦ Learn how to create a holiday newsletter from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 29. Jazz up your newsletter just in time for the holiday rush.
Events
♦ Breakfast for all Veterans and spouses ages 55 and over will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 3. There will be a Special Badger Honor Flight Video. Next breakfast is Nov. 7 with a Quilts of Valor Presentation.
♦ A mini trip to the World Dairy Expo will leave the center at 9 a.m. and returning around 5 p.m. This is open to anyone 55 and older. There is a cost for the bus and an admission fee, plus lunch is your own expense. Twenty-one people are needed to fill the bus.
♦ The golf outing from August is rescheduled for Oct. 3 at the Monroe Country Club.
♦ The Italy Trip 2019 Preview will be at 11 a.m. on Oct. 5. A representative from Mayflower Tours will preview the trip for 2019.
♦ Edward Jones is bringing three programs to the Senior Center to help with your finances. Starting at 11:30 a.m., Fundamentals of investment success will be on Oct. 9. A conversation on interest rates on Nov. 13, and learn how to be calm, cool and invested with financial strategies at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 4.
♦ The Southern Wisconsin Rock Prairie Dulcimers will be here at 2 p.m. on Oct. 16.
♦ Sand, Snakes and Silver Wings will be at 10 a.m. on Oct. 2 at the Monroe Public Library. Rebecca Hom will share stories of amazing WASP women, a civilian force of 1,100 women pilots who became the first females to fly a military aircraft.
♦ Jillann Gabrielle will present about the life and times of performer Hedda Hopper at 2 p.m. on Oct. 30.
♦ The October movie will be “The Book Club,” four lifelong friends’ lives that have been turned upside down after reading the book “50 shades of Grey” starts at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 25. Movie is 1 hour 44 minutes long.
♦ The annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Entertainment will be at noon on Nov. 9. We will start taking reservations at 8 a.m. on Oct. 16. Call 325-3173 to sign up, please do not leave a message.
♦ Join us for a series of programs presented by Jim Glessner. Each program will start at 1:30 p.m. and will feature its own special drink (non-alcoholic). There is a cost for each presentation and sign up for all five and get one free. Jim’s Family and the Armed Forces will be Dec. 7, The Three Wright Houses will be Jan. 16, Flowers and Pretty Things on Feb. 20, The Glessner and The Chicago Glessner House on March 20, and George Washington and Fort Necessity on May 22.
