FREEPORT - The award winning Trail of Terror swings into action during October with special events and haunted happenings.
Haunted houses, cemetery walks, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, festivals and more are what people will find on the seven county Trail of Terror which is a full listing of fall activities covering Carroll, DeKalb, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, and Whiteside counties.
The trail is a self-guided tour through Northwest Illinois with stops at such places as the Lena Haunted Barn, Terror on the Railroad in Union, The Old Haunted Mill in Orangeville, The Train of Terror in Freeport, and the Spirits of Yesteryear night tour at the Stephenson County Historical Society. The Sterling-Rock Falls Jaycees Haunted House will thrill scare visitors, and the Egyptian Theater Haunted House features Amenti, the Egyptian goddess guarding the world of the dead in DeKalb.
For those wanting a less scary venue and a chance to get out in the crisp fall air the Trail of Terror takes people to Mt. Carroll's Halloween Happening, Oregon's Autumn on Parade and the Stephenson County Fall Barn Tour.
Fall festivals are abundant throughout the eight counties and include Fulton's Fall Festival, Savanna's Spook Walk and Haunted Forest Festival, Sycamore's Pumpkin Festival, Halloween on the Prairie at the Byron Forest Preserve and others that feature small town events at their best!
Pumpkin patches, orchards, corn mazes and farmers markets full of fall produce are also a popular stop on the Trail featuring such activities as petting zoos, hayrides, campfires, Little Spook Houses and of course, pumpkin picking. Lodging accommodations are also included in the Trail of Terror information and many feature special rates during the fall season with no extra charge for little ghosts and goblins.
Visit Northwest Illinois and take a trip on the Trail of Terror. Some sites have admittance fees that range between $2 and $10. Some haunted happenings are scarier than others, so call before taking little ones.
