DARLINGTON - The Darlington Police Department, in conjunction with the Darlington Community School District, hosted its 25th Annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education Commencement Ceremony at 7 p.m. Monday at the Darlington Elementary-Middle School.
There were 67 fifth-graders who graduated from the program.
In addition to representatives from the school and police department, Mayor Dave Breuing, Sen. Howard Marklein, Rep. Todd Novak, city council members and police commission members were all on hand to acknowledge the students' achievements as well as to celebrate 25 years of D.A.R.E. in Darlington.
The Optimist Club of Darlington, the city of Darlington and Piggly Wiggly were all recognized for financial support of the program over the past 25 years. Guest speakers included Wisconsin Hall of Fame coach Arnie Miehe, Marklein and Novak.
D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug- and violence-free lives.
