MADISON - Laura Paulson, New Glarus, joined with students from around the state at Edgewood College, Madison, June 15-18, for CTSO state officer training, an event organized by the initiative known as ALL CTSO, which is a partnership of Wisconsin career and technical student organizations.

CTSO state officer training brings together state-level officers from three of the six students organizations to develop a strategic plan for the year and engage in service activities. The three participating CTSOs are DECA, an association of marketing students; FBLA, an association of business students; and FCCLA, as association of family and consumer students. Paulson is vice president of the FCCLA in New Glarus.

The training provides students an opportunity to develop leadership skills, civic literacy, and the ability to collaborate with peers. An outside team, Focus Training of Milwaukee, leads the participants in working together to create the plan of action for the CTSO for the 2008-09 school year. The students will develop as a collaborative team during an outdoor adventure/challenge course. They will help the Henry Vilas Zoo prepare for "Feast of the Beasts," a summer festival which raises money for habitat enrichment at the Madison zoo.

CTSOs are the co-curricular student organizations that enhance career and technical instruction offered in more than 300 Wisconsin high schools. These groups help students develop civic, technical and social skills, and a wholesome attitude about living and working. Wisconsin started the All CTSO initiative more than 15 years ago with this joint state officer training, and became the first state in the nation to employ this model of collaboration between the different groups. The idea has since been emulated by other states.
