MONROE - Monroe Parks and Recreation hosted its second Skateboard Clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 14. There were 24 participants registered, ages 7 -12, for skateboard lessons and 13 experienced MASE (Monroe Area Skatepark Enthusiasts) skaters were the volunteer instructors.
Monroe Clinic Hospital donated helmets and pads for the registered skaters. Green County EMS held a First Aid/Safety class for the skaters. Minhas Brewery supplied IENERGY drinks, and MASE supplied water for the skaters.
The clinic on June 14 was the first event MASE conducted in its efforts to win $5,000 in the ESPN, Mattel, X-games sponsored "Don't Knock Handouts" contest. There were door prizes of two X-games skateboards given away. All participants received a Mattel X-games fingerboard. The contest points are earned for how each skatepark can advertise for ESPN, Mattel and X-games. For example, for each Web page that posts the contest, MASE receives 10 points. Contact MASE to get information to post the contest on your Web page until the end of July. It's a way for the youth to raise $5,000 toward improving Honey Creek Skate Park. Two years ago, MASE was in a contest and won $10,000. MASE also has received a $5,000 grant from the Tony Hawk foundation.
