Ohio group makes Monroe Labor Day stop

MONROE - The congregation of St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe and Turner Hall welcome the Columbus Swiss Singers of Columbus, Ohio, Labor Day weekend.

The 35-voice mixed choir will sing at the 9 a.m. sanctuary service, Sunday, Sept. 6, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1724 14th St. The group's selections will include two pieces by Schubert, "Sanctus", and "Zum Gloria." Then, at 3:30 p.m. the singers will combine with the Monroe Swiss Singers to do a short program of Swiss folklore music at the Grand Hall inside Turner Hall, 1217 17th Avenue. The mini-concert will be a special feature of Turner Hall's weekly Sunday afternoon oldtime dance, for which there is an $8 admission charge.

The Columbus Swiss Singers is a combination of the Edelweiss Damenchor, founded in 1895, and the Helvetia Mannerchor, founded in 1890. Along with Green County's Swiss singing groups, the Columbus Swiss Singers are members of the North American Swiss Singing Alliance and participate in Swiss singing festivals and competitions every three years. Their many performance credits include the Swiss Festival in Berne, Ind.; Columbus International Festival; and the Ohio Swiss Festival in Sugarcreek, Ohio; as well as many other events in the Columbus area and around the Midwest.

John Long, director of vocal music and music department chairperson at Pickerington High School in Pickerington, a suburb of Columbus, has directed the Columbus Swiss Singers since 1979. A graduate of Central University, he earned his masters degree in music from Ohio State University. The Columbus Swiss Singers are accompanied by Matt Ebright, a music graduate of Ohio State University.

The Columbus Swiss Singers will also be appearing on Saturday evening, Sept. 5, in New Glarus as part of the Wilhelm Tell Festival, and Sunday, Sept. 6 at 11:30 a.m. at the New Glarus Home in New Glarus.
