New youth program sessions to begin in Jan.

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for various youth programs starting in January. The office is located in the basement of City Hall, 1110 18th Ave.

Boys and Girls Basketball

The department is taking registration for third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade basketball until Friday, Jan. 6. All games and practices will be held at Northside Elementary School.

The boys and girls leagues will be held on Mondays after school from 3:30 to 5 p.m. starting Jan. 9. Participants will work on their basketball skills, fun drills and play games. The season will end in Monday, Feb. 20.

The cost to participate is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Department.

The department is also looking for team sponsors. The cost $70 and covers the cost of shirts for a team.

Tumblin' Fun for 4- to 8-year-olds

The department is offering a tumbling class for children 4- to 8-years-old. The class meets at Northside Elementary gym from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday evenings, from Jan. 9 to Feb. 20. The participants will be tumbling; climbing the rope; using a spring board, balance beam, hula hoops, parachutes; doing relays and more. Each week will be a different theme, including Whiteout and Frosty Snowman, Sports, Pajamas, Blackout and Pirates, Hawaiian Beach, Valentine, and Rainbow themes. The cost is $24 for residents and $34 for non-residents. This class does fill up quickly, so early registration is advised.

Dance Classes

The department is offering dance classes for children 3- to 6 year-olds on Sundays, starting Jan. 8 through and ending March 25. The following dance classes are being offered:

Twinkle Toes Ballet is for children who love to dance and looking for a beginning ballet class. The class meets from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. and is for all 3-year-olds and new 4-year-olds.

Pre-Ballet is for students who have taken Twinkle Toes Ballet for at least two sessions. The program will work on more advanced ballet progressions. Class meets 6:15 to 7:00 and is for 5- to 6-year-olds and continuing 4-year-olds.

Costs of these programs are $36 resident and $46 non-resident. All dance classes are held at the community center. Instructors will be Ruth Maurer and Jesse Anderson.
