MONROE - At its annual business meeting this past Wednesday, the Green County Bar Association voted unanimously to support both the Monroe and New Glarus High School Mock Trial Teams with a generous grant of $300 to each team. The money will be used to support the team at the regional tournament to be held February 9, 2008 at the Dane County Courthouse in Madison.

This is the fourth year that New Glarus has fielded a team, and the first year for Monroe. This year's case is based on a fictional account of an individual accused of negligently causing the death of a local camper when a campfire allegedly triggered a grass fire. Students assume roles of either witnesses or lawyers, sift through the provided affidavits, construct arguments and then present their cases with live testimony.

The New Glarus team includes many returning members from last year. Elizabeth Brunner, Paige Chiarello, Rebecca Eastham, Markus Nevil and Julia Gartzke have assumed lawyer roles. Kari Yaun, Kalie French, and Krisitin Riniker are each taking two witness roles. The team is coached by Rebecca Fredericks and Dan Gartzke.

The Monroe team includes: seniors, Chelsey Metcalf and Natasha Morgan; juniors, Christina Mellenberger, Meg Tomasiewicz, Maggie Shuda, Niamh O'Neill Culhane, Peter Kelly, Stewart Wyss, Joseph Pecora, and Cody Plenge; sophomores, Stephanie Cline, Tessa Frutiger, Nicole Heinen, and Stephanie Wyss; and freshmen, Rachel White, Rachel Rogerson, Abbey Schneider, Jamie Everson and Corinne Frutiger. The team is coached by Attorney Tara Kleinhans and Monroe High School teachers Sarah Domres and Sherri Hendrickson.

This is the 25th year that the State Bar has sponsored the high school mock trial program. This year's program is dedicated to the memory of local attorney Rodney Kittelsen, who was one of the founding members of the program, and who generously supported the program through the years. The Green County Bar Association is pleased to honor Rod's memory by supporting this valuable program that gives high school students hands on experience with how our justice system functions.
