MONROE - The City of Monroe is celebrating 2008 for being its 20th year as a Tree City USA community.
The Department of Natural Resources is currently presenting Tree City USA National Awards to communities all across the state. Wisconsin ranks third in the nation with 172 communities holding Tree City USA status.
The National Arbor Day (April 25) Foundation created this program in 1976 to help communities enhance and promote their urban forests.
Four requirements must be met in order to be recognized as a Tree City USA. These include: having a designated tree board or forestry department, having an annual forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, having a tree care ordinance and hosting an Arbor Day Celebration. These communities have proven their dedication to the urban forest by seeking to improve and better manage their tree resources.
