MONROE - The first of two Monroe Arts Center speaker presentations regarding the Wisconsin environment will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall at 1315 11th St.

Curt D. Meine will speak on the topic "The Land Ethic: From Wisconsin to the World."

As a guiding philosophy for human's relationship with the natural world, the land ethic has deep roots in Wisconsin's conservation history. Meine will trace that history, connecting the stories of Wisconsin's Native Americans, scientists, writers, educators, landowners, policy-makers and citizen advocates. This can prepare all of us to ask the hard questions such as: How well are we living up to that legacy in Wisconsin and beyond, and what does the future hold for the land ethic as an evolving idea?

Meine is director for conservation biology and history with the Center for Humans and Nature, senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, research associate with the International Crane Foundation and associate adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has written and edited several books including "Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work," and he is coeditor of "The Essential Aldo Leopold," both published by the University of Wisconsin Press. He is currently co-editing a collection of essays titled "The Driftless Reader."

This presentation is free and open to the public. For additional information, call Monroe Arts Center at 608-325-5700 or visit online at monroeartscenter.com. This event is supported by corporate underwriter Colony Brands Inc. and media underwriters Monroe Publishing LLC and Big Radio.
