MONROE — Accomplished pianist Nina Kanyeva, who spent two of her preschool years in a Nazi slave labor camp, will perform from 4-5:30 p.m. May 22 at Monroe’s United Methodist Church.
The program includes classical piano pieces by a variety of composers including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Glinka, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Schubert and Tchaikovsky. Some of her experiences under Hitler and Stalin will also be recounted, including saving her mother’s life twice in a slave labor camp. She will be joined by her daughter, Natasha, also a classically trained pianist.
A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the World Central Kitchen’s work in feeding the people of Ukraine. From their website, World Central Kitchen is to be “first to the frontlines, providing meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crisis. We build resilient food systems with locally led solutions.”
