Cemetery Walk call for participants

DARLINGTON — The Lafayette County Historical and Genealogy Society will host a “Cemetery Walk” at Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington on Saturday, June 3.

This interesting, educational, and entertaining event involves a stroll through the cemetery where visitors will be able to chat with some of the permanent residents (who will be conveniently above ground to share their stories).

It is surprising how many famous, notorious, and fascinating people can be found in Union Grove — and the headstone information is just the tip of the iceberg.

Those interested in portraying a person from the past as an actor can contact the Museum at 608-776-8340 to sign up. The society can assist with research to build a story for a character and advice on what to wear.

Author talk and book signing in Darlington April 23

DARLINGTON — The Lafayette County Historical and Genealogy Society will host a special event for the launch of a new book involving the history of a Benton family that moved to the Kansas frontier, and in particular, 17-year-old Sarah Catherine White.

Come to the Museum, 525 Main Street, Darlington, on April 23 at 1:30 p.m. to hear from the author, learn about her research challenges and publishing process, family ties to the main characters, and be fascinated by history and genealogy. The event is free of charge. Books will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Author Bethlynn White did extensive and exhaustive research to be able to tell Sarah’s story using documented facts. Where documentation fails, she provides logical reasoning for assumptions necessary.

Moving west, as pioneers did, meant living on the edge of civilization without the many comforts and support of established communities, “back east.” But being taken as a slave by a totally different culture, while thinking the rest of the family had been murdered is a challenge hard to imagine. To survive and live to ultimately be reunited with family is a story worth reading.

Earth Day cleanup on Badger, Sugar River trails happening April 22

MONROE — The Friends of the Badger and Sugar River State Trails invite the public to help maintain the beautiful local trails by joining them for their Earth Day Trail Cleanup at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 22.

Winter has come and gone, and revealed a lot of trash and debris in its wake. The group is looking for volunteers interested in cleaning up the Badger and Sugar River State Trails.

They can use help picking up trash, moving branches and clearing brush from the trails. Choose a portion of the trail and join one of the board members for a morning clean-up walk. They will supply bags — and send a Friends decal as a “thank you” to any volunteer who spends at least an hour doing trail maintenance as part of the Earth Day Trail Cleanup event.

The Friends of the Badger and Sugar River State Trails appreciate any help. If April 22 does not work, but another day would, let them know what day works best.
