Lafayette County youth take part in the Wisconsin State Fair

DARLINGTON -Nearly fifty youth from Lafayette County participated in the 2008 Wisconsin State Fair, held in West Allis, WI, July 31-August 10. Lafayette County had participants in the Clothing Delegation, Dairy Show, Beef Show, Swine Show, Sheep Show, Showcase Singers, Youth Mini Performances and the Youth Exhibit areas.

Participants in the youth exhibit area included: Gus Olthafer, George Olthafer, Brandi Voigts, Molly Doan, Kayla Doan, Sara Doan, Keegan Kamps, and Kassi Kamps of Belmont; Tyler Berget, Cole Trumble, Jenna Hole, Christa Wamsley, Maddie Gallagher, Darby Fitzsimons, LeeAnn Kurschner, Brett Jones, Ashley Riley, Jordan Riley, Cole Whalen, Kayla Lange, Andy Turpin, April Brandt and Ashley Martin of Darlington; Jodi Fischer and Kelsey Ostby of Argyle; and Meshell Akins, D'elaine Bejgier, Thad Brenum, Marissa Monson, Aaron Monson, and Adam Moore of Gratiot/South Wayne area. The exhibits were on display throughout the fair, July 31-August 10. Merit award recipients were: Gus Olthafer, George Olthafer and Tyler Berget.

Awards and scholarships were awarded to several Lafayette County youth. Scholarships from the Governor's Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction were awarded to Kaley Bockhop, Belmont, and Justin Wedig, Darlington. Both Bockhop and Wedig filled out applications and interviewed at State Fair. Cody Carpenter, Darlington, received the prestigious James Crowley Award for his tremendous work and accomplishments as a dairy youth leader in Lafayette County. Carpenter was nominated and selected within the county, where he filled out an application and interviewed for the award during the Wisconsin State Fair.

Sixteen Lafayette County youth were among the state youth who exhibited their dairy animals at Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Show, July 31-August 3. Participants included: Rebeka Dieter, Breana Dieter, Katie Wallenhorst and Ashley Sullivan of Cuba City; Alex Abraham, Adam Moore, and Jakobi Dammen of South Wayne/Gratiot; Jeannie Dammen, Jackie Dammen and Tracy Dammen of Argyle; Shane Nodolf of Belmont; and Cody Carpenter, Colton Carpenter, Tyler Shager, Kyle Calvert, and Jeremy Calvert of Darlington. Results included:

• Cody Carpenter: 1st red 3-year-old Holstein cow

• Colton Carpenter: 2nd white Fall yearling Holstein heifer

• Tyler Shager: 8th red Winter Holstein Heifer Calf

• Kyle Calvert: 2nd blue Fall Yearling Brown Swiss heifer

• Jeremy Calvert: 4th red Fall Brown Swiss heifer calf

• Shane Nodolf: 2nd blue Summer Holstein Yearling; 2nd red Winter Holstein Yearling

• Jeannie Dammen: 1st red Winter Holstein Heifer Calf

• Jackie Dammen: 1st white Winter Holstein Heifer Calf

• Tracy Dammen: 3rd white Spring Holstein Yearling Heifer

• Ashley Sullivan: 7th blue Junior Holstein Heifer Calf

Kayla Clayton, Belmont, and Emma Berget, Darlington, represented Lafayette County at the State Fair Clothing Revue, August 2-4. They were selected as State Fair delegates at the Lafayette County Clothing Preview, held in June. Berget also participated in the State FFA Choir. Sara Doan, Belmont, participated in the mini-performance at State Fair. Sara received a merit award on her performance. Sara also participated in the 4-H Showcase Singers, who performed throughout the fair on various stages.

Nearly 25 youth from the county competed in the beef, sheep, and swine shows at State Fair, held August 4-7. Youth that exhibited beef included: Kaley Bockhop, Bekka Lee, Bryant Schobert, Chelsey Schobert and Miles Weigel of Belmont; Rebeka Dieter of Cuba City; Tayton Stolee of Argyle; Tyler Berget, Emma Berget, Justin Wedig, Mykel Wedig, Mitchell Wedig and Levi Wedig of Darlington and Greg Leahy of Shullsburg. Results included:

• Kaley Bockhop: 17 year-old Champion Showperson, Top 10 Beef Premier Exhibitor. In the open show, Kaley had the Grand Champion Wisconsin Angus Heifer, Reserve Champion Wisconsin Bull, Grand Champion Cow/Calf Pair, and two heifers placed 2nd blue in each class and were later selected as Bred and Owned Champions.

• Tayton Stolee: 8th overall Beef Showmanship; 2nd blue Hereford heifer; Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Hereford Heifer

• Bekka Lee: 2nd blue Crossbred steer

• Tyler Berget: participated in 13 year-old division; 3rd blue with Jr. Yearling Angus heifer

• Emma Berget: 5th place in 15 year-old Showmanship division; 2nd blue with Jr. Yearling Angus heifer

• Bryant Schobert: 3rd in class, Crossbred Market Steer

• Chelsey Schobert: 2nd in class, Crossbred Market Steer

• Justin Wedig: Champion Chi-Maine Steer; Reserve Grand Champion Overall Steer

• Mitchell Wedig: Champion Maine-Anjou Steer; 3rd Overall Champion Steer

• Mykel Wedig: Commercial heifer, 1st blue

• Levi Wedig: 3rd blue Crossbred Steer

• Greg Leahy: 7th red Crossbred Steer

• Miles Weigel: Two Crossbred Steers-both received 1st blue in class

• Rebeka Dieter: 1st red, Market Registered Dairy Steer and 1st white, Market Registered Dairy Steer

Sheep exhibitors included: Calvin Reilly and Tierney Reilly of Shullsburg; Courtney Lobdell of Darlington; Kirk Brenum of South Wayne/Gratiot and Shane Nodolf of Belmont. Results were:

• Calvin Reilly: Reserve Champion Suffolk wether, 1st place in class with a separate Suffolk wether. Both wethers were home-raised.

•Tierney Reilly: Champion 15 year-old Sheep Showmanship; Champion Hampshire wether; Grand Champion Wether overall; Grand Champion Commercial Ewe (selected as Reserve Grand Champion Overall Ewe); and 2nd blue with Crossbred Lamb. Both the wether and ewe were home-raised.

• Courtney Lobdell: Lead Class-2nd blue; Showmanship-7th place; Yearling Ram-1st Blue (later named Champion Southdown Ram); Fall Ram Lamb-2nd blue; Spring Ram Lamb-3rd Blue; Yearling Ewe-5th Blue; Fall Ewe Lamb-1st Red; Winter Ewe Lamb-1st White; Spring Ewe Lamb-1st Red; Pair of Lambs-3rd Blue; Southdown Flock-2nd Blue; Market Lamb-4th Blue.

• Kirk Brenum: 1st red Dorset Wether

• Shane Nodolf: 1st pink Dorset wether and 2nd white Suffolk wether

Lafayette County swine exhibitors included: Calvin Reilly and Tierney Reilly of Shullsburg; Tyler Berget and Emma Berget of Darlington; James McDonald and Josh Lowe of South Wayne/Gratiot; Tayton Stolee of Argyle; Kolten Bartell of Benton/Belmont; and Tia Niffenegger and Cameron Carey of Belmont.

• Emma Berget: 7th place in 15 year-old showmanship; 2nd blue with Spot Market Barrow; 1st Blue (class winner) with Spot Market Barrow

• James McDonald: 1st red, Crossbred Barrow and 1st pink, Crossbred Barrow

• Tayton Stolee: 1st white Duroc Barrow and 1st pink Spotted Barrow

• Kolten Bartell: 2nd white Duroc Barrow
