MONROE - Twenty stores downtown will stay open to celebrate the Halloween Trunk and Treat celebration.
The Halloween parade begins at 4:30 p.m. Monday, after which treats will be handed out for the celebrants. All children, adults and pets in costume are welcome to walk in the parade. The line-up for the parade is at 4 p.m at Monroe Middle School's north entrance.
Some participants in the parade will be handing out 3-inch red toy fire hydrants filled with 15 plastic bags. They are for dog owners to use to pick up their dog's feces. The Main Street design committee hopes this encourages people to clean up after their pets.
The toy fire hydrants filled with plastic bags are free and also can be found at these stores on the square: Toy Haus, Sequels, Joanne's, Green Door, Edelweiss Gifts and Burington Shoes.
The Trunk portion of the Trunk and Treat celebration takes place after the parade in the inner ring of the square until 6 p.m. Andy Hill, president of the Main Street Executive Board, will open his trunk and hand out candy. Others also are invited to provide candy from the trunks of their decorated cars. The rain location is the bottom level of the downtown parking ramp.
Anyone interested in being in the parade or participating in the trunk event should contact the Main Street office at monroemainstreet@tds.net to register. Cars must be parked by 4 p.m.
