FREEPORT - The Northwest Illinois Amateur Radio Club (NWIARC) will be participating in the annual Field Day Event on June 28 and 29. The purpose of Field Day is to set up and operate amateur radio stations in a temporary location, to simulate what might be necessary in an emergency. Amateur radio clubs and individual hams from the United States and Canada try to make as many contacts as possible from 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28 to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29. The NWIARC will be operating from Flagstaff Hill in Krape Park, using generators for electrical power and using temporary antennas. Last year the club made over 800 contacts using voice, digital and Morse code.
