APPLE RIVER - The results of the Eagle Nature Foundation's 49th annual Midwinter Bald Eagle County have been released by the count coordinator, Terrence N. Ingram. The count documented only 2,830 birds, about 1,200 fewer birds than last year. The percentage of immature eagles in the population has continued on a downward trend with a 10 percent drop in one year.
Many bald eagle wintering communities have lost their immature birds almost entirely and are gradually losing their adults.
ENF is starting a petition drive to have the Fish and Wildlife Service place the bald eagle back on the federally Endangered Species List. To obtain a copy of the report and/or petition, contact the ENF office at (815) 594-2306.
