Eighth grader wins national award

NEW GLARUS - Kaitlin Jennrich, an eighth grader at New Glarus Middle School, has been awarded a National Silver Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest for grades 7 through 12. She will be honored on stage at New York's Carnegie Hall during a National Awards recognition ceremony on June 4 and will participate in a variety of writing workshops and events in New York City.

Jennrich, who received the honor in the short story category, was one of 300 writers selected to receive gold or silver awards from a group of 2,500 regional winners. In all, over 140,000 works of writing and art were submitted to the competition this year. The national judging panelists selected the winners based on three criteria: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

According to the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, which produces and presents the competition, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation's longest-running, largest, most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in grades 7 though 12. Past competition winners include Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Redford.
