MONROE - A cover crops demonstration will be held at 10 a.m. April 16 in the plot at the county farm, N3150 Wisconsin 81.

The discussion will continue on the benefits of cover crops and demonstrations will be provided to show how to manage for good soil health. Reasons a person might plant a cover crop includes: nitrogen source, nitrogen scavenger, soil builder, subsoiler, topsoil loosener, erosion preventer, lasting residue, weed fighter, grazing value and forage value. Most of these characteristics have to be assessed in the soil. Most are aimed at improving soil health.

Brian Hillers, area resource conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will be pointing out the benefits and possible negative effects of the nine species planted in the plot at the county farm. Dale Breuer, a forage advisor for Heritage Seed Company, will answer questions regarding seed selection, dates and methods. Several demonstrations will show the importance of managing soil structure and keeping residue on the soil.

The event is free of charge and recommended for all farmers. For more information, contact the Green County Land Conservation Office at 608-325-4195 ext. 3.
