DARLINGTON - Eight students received awards Jan. 30 at the Darlington boys' basketball game, where the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association awarded both a Team Academic All-State award and an Individual Academic All-State award.

To qualify for a team award, a team has to qualify for the state meet and the average of the top five cumulative GPAs of the runners on the team must be at least 3.4. The combined average this year was 3.75. This is the 10th year in a row that the cross country team has qualified.

To earn the Individual Award, the runner has to qualify for the state meet and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.

This was Curtis Blosch's first year receiving the award, Paul King, Trae Schilling and Ilse Mendez's second year and Tanner Evenstad's fourth year receiving the individual award. Tanner was a part of three state championship teams and one runner-up team at state.

Cross country is the only sport that requires athletes to compete at the state level to be eligible for their academic award. Schilling, Mendez and Evenstad all have a 3.9 GPA. Mendez placed 23rd at the state meet this year.

Of the last nine years the girls have qualified for state as a team, they have earned the team award.

They received it in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016. The boys have won this challenging award 10 years in a row, from 2008-2017.

They all run and train under award-winning coach Arnie Miehe.
