MONROE - "It's not too late to Catch the Reading Bug at the Monroe Public Library," says Kristen Ault, Youth Services Librarian. "Teachers and parents know that reading for fun during the summer helps young students keep their reading skills at grade level, ensuring a good start to the coming school year. Our reading incentive programs continue, plus we will bring back Cool Movies for Hot Days, a series of films for children ages 4 and up."
"When it's too hot to play outside and too rainy to go to the pool, we invite kids to join their friends at the library for Cool Movies for Hot Days," says Ault. "We will provide the movie. Kids are welcome to bring their own snacks."
Wednesday afternoons during August will find children of all ages enjoying specially chosen films. All movies are rated G by the MPAA and will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. The library's meeting room, where the films will be shown, is air conditioned, has an 8 foot by 12 foot screen, and surround sound.
In keeping with the reading theme for the summer, Catch the Reading Bug, the Wednesday, Aug. 6, movie is based on the life on a colony of ants. Flik, our hero, comes up with a plan to keep the food gathered by the ant colony instead of turning over to the grasshoppers. Little does he know that the bugs he recruits to help him are an inept troupe of circus performers.
Described as an epic of miniature proportions, the animated film features the voices of Dave Foley as Flik, Kevin Spacey as Hopper, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Atta, Hayden Paneterrie as Dot, and Phyllis Diller as the queen.
Wednesday, Aug. 13, will bring the popular children's book character, Eloise, to the library screen. Based on the best-selling books by Kay Thompson, the movie features sprightly 6-year-old Eloise at her best, running the lives of celebrated guests and dedicated staff at the Plaza Hotel in New York.
Eloise is played by Sofia Vassilieva and Nanny by Julie Andrews. Written by Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, the famous Eloise stories were first published in the 1950's. They remain in print and a series of easy reader books based on the character been added to the Eloise collection.
Other Cool Movies for Hot Days will include the film based on the book, "A Day with Wilbur Robinson" by William Joyce. On Aug. 20, follow the exploits of the wonderfully wacky Robinson family as they help young orphan, Lewis, escape from the Bowler Hat guy.
E.B. White's book, "Stuart Little," comes to the library screen on Aug. 27. The movie chronicles the adventures of a heroic and debonair little mouse named Stuart Little as he searches for his lost bird friend while living with a human family as their adopted son.
Reading rewards programs for ages 3-18 will run through August with plenty of time to earn top level prizes. All programs encourage children and students to keep track of the time they spend reading on a weekly Reading Fun Card. The completed card may be returned to the library at any time. New cards are available each Monday through Aug. 25.
Reading Explorers for ages 3 to 6 are encouraged to share books with an older reader. The returned Reading Fun Card for their program will earn a small weekly prize.
Participants in the Big Bug Reading Challenge, students entering first through fifth grades, and Metamorphosis, the teen reading program for students entering sixth through 12th grades, will receive coupons in exchange for the completed record card.
Prizes for the Big Bug Reading Challenge and Metamorphosis include books, T-shirts, toys, jewelry, and games.
Youngsters who are not reading independently may read with a partner or listen to recorded books and earn the same prizes as their peers.
