MONROE - The National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Association of Rural Carriers, with cooperation from the United States Postal Service, on May 12 are hosting the largest single day food drive in the United States.

This is the 26th annual food drive, and the 71 million pounds of food collected throughout the United States last year brought the total collected to over 1.5 billion pounds.

One in five families is food-insecure in the United States, and one in four is a child. As families in unprecedented numbers struggle to make ends meet, the drive is more vital than ever. The food pantry shelves from the holiday food drives have been emptied. This is a critical time of year for food-insecure children, as school food programs that ensure children are adequately fed during the school year are not available in the summer months.

Blue bags will be delivered in the mail the week before the food drive. Put donations of non-perishable food items in the bags and place by the mailbox May 12 for letter carriers to pick up. The food will be delivered to the Green County Food Pantry in Monroe.
