4-H leaders hold annual banquet

DARLINGTON -Lafayette County 4-H members, leaders and parents attended the annual Lafayette County 4-H Leaders' Association Recognition Banquet Oct. 10 at the Lafayette County Fairgrounds Floral Hall in Darlington. The banquet marked the beginning of the National 4-H Week in Lafayette County. The banquet was emceed by Mary Bahr, 4-H Leaders' Association President.

The prestigious Key Award was presented to Emma Berget, Wiota Happy Hour 4-H, and Ashley Martin, Willow Springs 4-H Club. The Key Award is awarded to up to two senior 4-H members in recognition of excellence in character and outstanding leadership. The awards were presented by Leon Wolfe, Agriculture and Extension Committee Chairperson.

Chelsea Fortin, Wiota Happy Hour 4-H Club, and Jordin Wedig, Pleasant View 4-H Club, were awarded with the Step Into the Future Award. Both are veteran members of their 4-H club in Lafayette County and both have been very active in many county- and state-wide activities. These awards were presented by Lisa Carpenter, Leaders' Association President-Elect.

Dorothy Carey, Mound View 4-H, received the celebrated Hillery Award for her service to the Lafayette County 4-H program, as well as her dedicated service to the Mound View 4-H. Lynette Dornink, County Wide Leader, presented the award. Jean Stauffacher, 4-H Leaders' Association Director, presented Dee Dunbar and Marcia Cordts with the Volunteers of the Year Award for their service to starting and growing the 4-H dog project of Lafayette County.

Other leader awards were presented by Anita Rygh, Leaders' Association Treasurer, who presented them to Lafayette County 4-H Leaders who have been leaders for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years. Five-year leaders included: Adam Abraham, Wiota Happy Hour; David Calvert, Willow Springs; Vicky DeNure, Wiota Happy Hour; B.J. Jones, Wiota Happy Hour; Rodney Kurschner, Willow Springs; Jayne Kurschner, Willow Springs; Mark Lierman, Dunbarton; Marian Olson, Pleasant View; Carmen Rielly, Fayette Go-Getters; Julie Shager, Wiota Happy Hour; and Denise Tillotson, Pleasant View; 10-year leaders included Nikki Cooper, Wiota Happy Hour; Katrina Gleason, County-wide leader; and Dawn Lee, Mound View. Steve Carpenter, Wiota Happy Hour, and Elaine Beranek, Beranek Family Club, were awarded with 15-year certificates; and Carolyn Abraham, Wiota Happy Hour; Allen Abraham, Wiota Happy Hour; Lynette Dornink, Mound View and County-wide leader; and Todd Palzkill, Mound View, were recognized for their 20 years of 4-H volunteer service.

The Meritorious Service Award was presented to Marcia Palzkill, a longtime Mound View 4-H Volunteer and the county-wide cake decorating leader. Palzkill has spent countless time on the cake decorating project and has opened her doors to the program for many years. The award was presented by Jean O'Neill, Leaders' Association Director.

Lisa Carpenter, Food Stand Coordinator, presented Fayette Go-Getters 4-H Club with the Food Stand Award.

The Dairy Promotion Award was presented to Wiota Happy Hour, for their promotion of the dairy industry during Dairy Promotion Month. The club will receive a gift certificate from the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. The award was presented by Leaders' Association Director Lisa Trumble.

Jessie Potterton, 4-H Youth Development Educator, presented Colton Carpenter with the Lafayette County James W. Crowley Dairy Leadership Award. Carpenter received this award after being selected by the dairy project leaders and organizational leaders of the county as an outstanding youth participant in the dairy project. Ashley Martin was named runner-up for this award. After Carpenter and Martin were notified they won this past summer, both youth were then encouraged to apply at the state level. Both Carpenter and Martin applied and were named part of the Top 10 4-H dairy youth leaders in the state of Wisconsin.

All 4-H Area Animal Science Day participants were also recognized for participating and earning outstanding awards at the 2010 Area Animal Science Day competition in Grant County this past summer.

4-H Clover Awards were presented to many Lafayette County 4-H youth who went "above and beyond" the opportunities that were offered to them in the 4-H Program. Youth were presented awards from 4-H Leaders' Association Secretary, Jackie Kamps of Pleasant View 4-H, and Board Directors Erin Gallagher and Jolene Martin, Willow Springs. Recipients included: Jon Bahr, Holly Voigts, Brandi Voigts and Raine Voigts of Pleasant View 4-H; Katie Calvert and Meghan Douglas of Willow Springs; Alexis Fladseth and Shane O'Neill of Cuba City Merry Mixers; Carson Carpenter, Chelsea Fortin, John Fortin, Jared Meister, Kyle Thompson and Cole Trumble of Wiota Happy Hour; Mitchell Kautz of Dunbarton; Kassandra Palzkill and Katelyn Schobert of Mound View; Grady Rielly and Gunnar Rielly of Fayette Go-Getters and Grant Ritchie and Dane Siegenthaler of Lamont Hustlers.
