MONROE - Twenty-four members of the Green County Leaders Class of 2008-2009 finished the nine-month coursework and became GC Leaders graduates on May 20 at a special banquet held in their honor at the Monroe Country Club.

This was the seventh class to graduate from the program. Members represented businesses, nonprofits and government organizations. The program, which held its first all-day session in September 2008, covered various aspects of leadership and leadership development along with information about Green County community, history, infrastructure, government, natural resources, businesses, economy and resources.

The classes were held throughout the county, allowing members a chance to get to know the various communities in Green County. In addition, class members had the chance to see the county from above - small plane ride opportunities provided an aerial view. Members of the class created teams to complete a final class project focused on helping the Green County community.

Members of the class included: Kris Baumgartner and Donna Bradley, Alliant Energy; Jean Busker, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Green County; Brent Smith, Charleton; Jeff Jenson, Dave Mosher and Associates; Tom Purdy, Fehr-Graham and Associates; Richard Grahn, Green County Spotlight; Jocelyn Kline, Behring Senior Center of Monroe; Mary Berger and Liz Carroll, Monroe Clinic; Barbara Brewer, Monroe Public Library; Denise Anton Wright, New Glarus Public Library; Gene Jacobson and Mike Starck, Precision Drive and Control; Joy Roth and Shelley Thompson, Reffue, Pas, Jacobson and Koster; Barb "Tiger" Myers, ReMax Preferred and Green County Habitat for Humanity; DeAnne Boegli, TDS Telecommunications; Jill Anderson, Russ Davis, Dawn Johnson and Hillary Wood, The Swiss Colony; Bridget Mouchon, UW Extension-Green County; and John McNeil, Big Radio.

In addition, each year Green County Leader participants are asked to create a team project to identify and address a need in the county. This year five teams presented their final projects for evaluation at the May session. Community judges Chris Wellington, BTC; Art Carter, Green County; Carl Hearing, The Monroe Times; and Ryan Kubly, The Swiss Colony and GCL Executive Committee Chair, evaluated the presentations.

Green County Leaders is made possible through a partnership of the Green County Development Corporation, Green County UW-Extension, the Monroe Campus of Blackhawk Technical College, and other area organizations and businesses that donate their time by serving on program committees and as session speakers. The program's mission is to provide an educational program where individuals can practice leadership skills, deepen their understanding of community issues and prepare for leadership roles, thereby creating a network of individuals committed to the future of Green County.

The program consists of an orientation, nine classes and the graduation ceremony. Program advisors are GCDC Executive Director Anna Schramke, Green County UW-Extension Community Development Educator Cara Carper, and Community Leader Kent Anderson. More than 150 people in the Green County area have graduated from the program since its conception in 2001.
