The first Concert on the Courthouse Square is Thursday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m., hosting the country band Horsefeathers. What a great opportunity for participants young and old to enjoy free entertainment in a relaxed and congenial setting.
The concerts are in the third year of bringing area residents outstanding music entertainment. While the variety in music may not meet each individual's interest, it should be noted that exposure to various genre is intended when identifying bands for the concerts. Whether it's country, jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, swing or Dixie, there is something for everyone.
Celebrating live music and great musicians is a part of America's heritage. At each concert, I take a minute to look around at the audience. It is truly a Norman Rockwell moment. People are milling around, in and out of restaurants and shops, mingling with old friends, and making new. For me, watching this interaction is reminiscent of when I played in a band on my hometown square as a youth. Fortunately, some things don't change.
Main Street Monroe brings to the community the opportunity to experience first-hand live music at its best. While participants of all ages will enjoy the concerts, think about the opportunity for area youth to be exposed to music venues beyond what they are accustomed to. As chairperson of the concerts, I encourage parents and grandparents to "hook" our youth on the broad spectrum of music the concerts offer. I hope to see you the second and fourth Thursdays of June, July and August for a "taste" of community in your downtown.
