State Representative, Wisconsin's 5th Assembly District, Majority Leader of the Wisconsin Assembly

To the editor:

I am the Majority Leader in the Wisconsin Assembly. Serving in this capacity, I have the opportunity to work with each and every legislator in our house, including Representative Todd Novak from Dodgeville. I wanted to take some time and write a letter expressing my high opinion of him as a person, and my perspective on his time in the legislature.

One of my duties as Majority Leader includes rallying support for bills that come before our caucus. It may sound counterintuitive, but if there is one thing I respect most about Todd, it is that he is never afraid to tell me "no." He takes great pride in representing his district's priorities. If these priorities don't match up with the priorities of other districts, whether represented by a Democrat or a Republican, Representative Novak makes that point well known. He is an independent voice if I've ever seen one, and he makes our caucus and the Assembly as a whole all the better for it.

There are plenty of things on which we passionately agree. One of them is school funding. Todd voted in favor of the largest increase to K-12 public education in Wisconsin's history. We both also voted in favor of a bill that prohibits health companies from denying coverage because of preexisting conditions.

Rep. Novak has been a part of a bipartisan task force to improve foster care, and authored a bill to make college more affordable for children who came through the foster care system. You have a great advocate in Todd Novak - thanks for sending him to Madison!
