To the editor:

Do you know what kills more people than prostate and breast cancer combined? Alzheimer's disease. This quiet stealer of memories, minds and lives is the only Top 10 disease that has no prevention, treatment or cure.

At Azura Memory Care we to see firsthand how this disease ravages not only the person diagnosed, but their family and friends. In fact, nearly every person in our community knows someone who has been touched by memory loss, which is why we are asking everyone to join the Azura Advocacy Team at the Alzheimer's Association's annual "Wisconsin Advocacy Day" on Tuesday, April 21. This special day works to alert our lawmakers of the struggles and issues facing those diagnosed with dementia and their care providers and will start at 9:30 a.m. at the Capitol Lakes Retirement Center, which is located at 333 W. Main St. in Madison.

Those who attend will learn more about the association's state priorities, how to hold a legislative visit and be served lunch. At 12:15 p.m. advocates are grouped and given the opportunity to meet with their state legislator(s) or designated representative(s). Last year Azura Advocates were able to gain support for increased funding of local dementia specialists and were integral in the passing of the Silver Alert program.

You can join the Azura Advocacy Team by first registering with the Alzheimer's Association by calling Tim Harrington at 414-479-8800 or emailing him at tharrington@alz.org. In addition, please feel free to email Paula Gibson, Azura's Director of Community Relations at paula.gibson@azuramemory.com or call 715-491-0880 for more information.
