Important construction work in New Glarus
Placeholder Image
Most people have seen the construction work done north of the sewage treatment plant in New Glarus. No it's not a Wal-Mart, or Menards, nor the east side gas station coming to town. The work being done is streambank protection and habitat restoration.

Many people may not recognize all the other stream work that has been done and is continuing to be done in the New Glarus/Monticello area either. Why now? Landowners are beginning to realize they have a tremendous resource on their property that has been neglected and not maintained. They have a creek, stream or river on their property.

People now understand they must maintain the stream and riparian corridors (land adjacent to the stream). The benefits to reestablishing the stream and corridors are: reduced flooding, increase of outdoor recreation, a decrease in soil erosion, enhancement of animal diversity, and in many cases creates a more visual stimulating area. I congratulate and thank landowners who have recognized the resource concerns and have stepped up to the plate to fix and maintain these areas.

I would like to thank those individuals and groups that have helped in the effort to revitalize the streams and riparian corridors and re-establish the habitat. Thank you:

• Blackhawk Chapter of Trout Unlimited for financial support and many hours of labor in building fish habitat;

• Green County Conservation League for financial support and labor;

• The New Glarus Community Fund for financial help;

• Colleen Hoesly for many hours of assisting with surveying, habitat building, and seeding;

• Michael Hanson, Daniel Harried, Mike Vetterli, and Young Ja Vetterli for their assistance with building habitat.

Landowners interested in revitalizing their streams can sign up for funding and assistance from the Green County Department of Land Conservation (DLC) and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) until the end of January. If you have questions or would like to meet with someone on your property from DLC or the NRCS, feel free to give us a call at 325-4195.
