Help make this Christmas a little merrier for those affected by Sandy

To the editor:

As we all know, the folks on our east coast have suffered a great natural disaster. We can do nothing about the disaster, but we can do something about the slow, tedious recovery. To this end, St. Clare Youth Ministry and I discussed the possibility of taking some Christmas to two parishes caught in the middle of the mess. One is St. Francis de Salles in Belle Harbor, N.Y. This is home to many of the folks who lost 57 firemen and police in 9/11 and then three weeks later were hit again when a jumbo jet crashed into the neighborhood. They have now not only suffered with Sandy, but many homes in this area were destroyed by fire as well. I have been in contact with them, and we both thought maybe we could bring some very practical Christmas gifts for the parish to distribute - things like blankets, sheets, towels, diapers, clothes, cleaning supplies. Some of these folks are still without electricity, so anything that would warm body and soul would be a gift.

The other parish is in Elizabeth, N.J. St. Mary's has a food pantry, a homeless meal and shelter, and they are being stretched beyond their means. We thought we could bring them a load of non-perishable food.

We need you to help make this happen. Can you donate any goods or gifts? Can you donate cash to help underwrite our trip?

This we know, Mother Teresa had it right when she said: "I can't do what you can do, and you can't do what I can do, but together we can do something beautiful for God." Can you help us do the beautiful?

When?

Trucks will be parked in the St. Victor School parking lot to receive donations on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All goods and gifts must be packed in boxes. If you need to drop items off during the work week, please contact Jane McAuliffe at the Parish Center, 325-9506 or faithcoordrv@gmail.com and she will get them over to the lot and in the correct truck. We are also willing to pick up - just call or send an email.

Some of us will be driving out on Thursday, Dec. 20, to deliver our gifts and returning on Saturday.
