SOUTH WAYNE - The Warriors narrowly survived Albany's deadly shooting to escape their home floor with a 54-49 victory Tuesday night.
The Comets singed the nets over Black Hawk's zone defense as Amy Golz led a white-hot host of shooters with eight of her 16 points in the first quarter of the Six Rivers East tilt.
"We haven't seen a team that has shot the ball as well as Albany did all season," Warriors coach Mike Flanagan said.
Paige Butler worked inside and out to rack up a game-high 19 points for Black Hawk.
"Somebody told me after the game that she had 19 and I couldn't believe them," Flanagan said. "Her scoring just comes so naturally."
Sophomore post Kim Wellnitz pitched in 17 with physical play as Black Hawk managed a 33-29 halftime lead but never truly pulled away.
Albany hopes to pull out a victory at Argyle on Friday night.
Argyle 38, Monticello 32
The Ponies got out of their pen a bit too slow at home against anxious Argyle on Tuesday night.
Monticello (0-7, 0-4 Six Rivers East) scored just 12 points in the first half and the Orioles led 24-12 at the halftime horn.
Argyle (5-3, 2-2) got 14 and 12 points from seniors Amber Thomas and Brittany Flannery, respectively. Thomas buried all four of her 3-pointers in the first half.
"We've been waiting for her to catch fire a little bit," Argyle coach Steve Dammen said.
"We were not awake and weren't knowing where she was even though we knew she was a good shooter coming in," Monticello coach Heath Eliason said.
Argyle turns around to host Albany on Friday night, while Monticello hosts Rock Valley's Parkview in non-conference action.
Barneveld 75, Juda 23
Unfortunately for Curt Brown, Barneveld evidently has 20/20 vision.
The Eagles soared to a 42-14 halftime lead, evidently not looking ahead three nights to a showdown with visiting Pecatonica, an early battle for the Six Rivers East lead.
"I was hoping they'd be thinking about that one, but I guess not," Brown said.
Laura Brown led Barneveld (4-1, 3-1 Six Rivers East) with 14 points as the Eagles put on a physical clinic.
"We're a young team that's coming together," Brown said, "but their physiciality was tough on us."
Juda doesn't get a breather - Black Hawk visits Friday night.
Brodhead 56, Parkview 45
Brodhead enjoyed the role of spoiler for one night.
Junior post Kristin Ruchti scored 16 points in the Cardinals' victory over Parkview, knocking the Vikings out of sole possesion of first place in the Rock Valley Conference and putting Brodhead into a four-way tie atop the conference.
Brodhead had a 29-22 lead at half and extended it to 43-28 after three quarters. Dana Lewis, another post presence, added 12 points in the victory.
Brodhead, Parkview, Clinton and Big Foot all sit in first place with 3-1 conference records.
Plattevile 54
Darlington 50
Platteville's Jessica Jentz started on fire. The Redbirds did not, and as a result the Hilltoppers successfully defended their home turf.
Jentz dropped in 14 of her 18 points in the first half and Darlington never held a lead in the non-conference setback.
"We came out, struggled early and never got in front," Darlington coach Curt Kohen said.
Cassie Fink scored 13 points and nearly rallied her club late, but Darlington couldn't get closer than 51-50 with a minute to play. The Redbirds look to bounce back in SWAL play when Southwestern visits Friday.
