The nominees for the Monroe Athlete of the Week are:
Kris Rieder: The senior pitched six innings of shutout baseball as the Cheesemakers beat Monona Grove 2-1. Rieder helped Monroe improve to 5-1 and 3-0 in the Badger South. On April 13, Rieder scored the game-winning run on Cory Kundert's hit and he came and earned the save on the mound with two strikeouts in the Cheesemakers' 3-2 win over Fort Atkinson.
Joel Henry: The sophomore finished fourth place in the 3,200-meter run at the Badger Challenge and helped the Cheesemakers seal the meet with his finish, which was a personal record by 36 seconds. Henry then won the 1,600 (5:03) in a 106-31 dual meet win over Brodhead-Juda.
Gwen Sutter: The senior blasted a two-run homer to spark the Cheesemakers to a 10-7 win over Monona Grove. With the win, Monroe (2-6) snapped a four-game losing streak.
Area Boys
Cody Foster, Black Hawk: The senior won the 110-meter high hurdles (:17.26) and he took first in the 300 hurdles (:45.02) at the first conference meet at Cassville.
Nate Thomas, Argyle: The junior tossed a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Black hawk April 15. He struck out six and didn't allow a baserunner past second base. On April 12, Thomas pitched three innings and struck out five in the orioles' 6-4 win over Albany.
Colton Hackett, Darlington: Hackett went 3-for-4 as the Redbirds beat Riverdale 6-4 as the Redbirds stayed unbeaten in the SWAL.
Area Girls
Hannah Kernen, Sugar River: The junior scored seven goals to lead the Raiders to a 9-0 win over Dodgeville. Kernen also scored three goals and had an assist in Sugar River's third place finish at the annual Swiss Kick tournament.
Amber Ramos, Juda: The junior pitched a no-hitter and struck out 14 April 15 to lead the Panthers to a 2-0 win over Pecatonica.
Rachel Rygh, Black Hawk: The junior won three individual events in the first conference meet at Cassville. She won the 100 (:13.53), 200 and the 400 (1:09.66).
