STOUGHTON - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swimming team is battling illness and lost a dual meet to Stoughton 103-67 Tuesday.
"It was a sluggish night in the pool for the girls, the first one all season," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "I wasn't surprised, as they have all been fighting colds and flu for about two weeks now. Despite all the illness though, as a team they scored 17 more points than they did last year against Stoughton with three less varsity swimmers. They swam with everything they had, but they were just not 100 percent physically."
Monroe-New Glarus freshman Maddie Hammer won the 200-yard individual medley with a personal-record time of 2 minutes, 22.87 seconds and won the 100 breaststroke with a PR of 1:13.44.
The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Abby Oudinot, Hammer, Anna Wolf and Grace Moehn finished first (2:04.78). Wolf won the 100 butterfly (1:08.13) and sophomore Skylar Lassen finished first place in the 100 backstroke (1:10.82). Senior Monica Sefcik swam a PR in the 500 freestyle (6:22.80) to take third place.
"Our focus will be to get stronger and improve all the fine points, starts, turns, finishes, break outs, as we head down the final weeks of the season," Moser said.
