Softball roundup: Greed kills as Vikings can't get fourth league win; Orioles continue upsurgence

HOLLANDALE - You can't blame the Vikings for getting a little greedy.

After winning just one Six Rivers East ballgame last season, Pecatonica (3-9 Six Rivers East) pressed its luck in the third inning of a 2-1 loss to Albany Thursday evening.

After Dana Gilbertson doubled and scored on a second straight two-bagger by senior catcher Molly Dieterich, Vikings coach Chuck Meyer didn't hold Dieterich up as she went for third. When the throw got away, still no stop sign as Dieterich was nailed at the plate trying to take a 2-1 lead.

"We haven't scored that many runs this season, man," Meyer said. "We were gonna make 'em make the play."

Albany senior Megan Schulz got into a home run to left center in the sixth inning to deliver the Comets (7-3).

Tara Walz beat another senior, Mallory Massey, in a bona fide pitchers' duel as Massey issued the only walk of the game.

SIX RIVERS EAST

ARGYLE 8, MONTICELLO 3>

How familiar things are becoming in Argyle.

After failing to establish rhythm most of this season, the Orioles are getting hot at the right time, most recently with an 8-3 conference victory over Monticello Thursday evening.

Argyle struck for four runs in the third to pull away early as Sierra Granberg cracked a two-run double before Kim Fischer and Chelsea Zersen followed with RBI-singles.

Freshman Kelsey Bartels won her second consecutive start for Argyle, which didn't ignore the small details.

"We ran the bases as well as we have all season," Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert said.

SWAL

RIVERDALE 11,

DARLINGTON 1 (5 INNINGS)>

Lori Thomas was cruising Thursday evening.

The Chieftains' starter added a pair of hits to go along with a four-hit, complete-game performance as Riverdale won in five innings.

Abby Schulte had the lone Darlington RBI in the seventh inning.
