JUDA - The ninth annual Six Rivers Conference All-Star game brought some more excitement with a 3-point contest between the girls and boys games.
The East out-shot the West in the 3-point contest 101-70 Friday at Juda High School. The Six Rivers West girls All-Star team knocked off the East 47-37. In the nightcap, the West boys defeated the East in a thriller 76-75.
The two all-star games are a fundraiser for the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison. Black Hawk girls basketball coach Mike Flanagan, who serves as the Six Rivers All-Star game director, said the event raised $1,060 and that included $310 raised by the West boys All-Star team.
"I feel it's become a consistent event," Flanagan said. "It's really taken on a role. It's a really a credit to Juda for getting the volunteers. I just like watching the kids play one more time, and it's a great opportunity to give our fans one more time to watch them play. We are proud of what we have done, but I think we can do more."
The games have raised more than $10,000 since they were launched by former Black Hawk boys basketball coach Jerry Mortimer.
"It was a great experience," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said who coached the East girls All-Star team. "You feel that pride to represent your conference. Even though we didn't get the win, it was great to see the faces and personalities of the other players in the conference. You are not enemies. You are playing for the same common goal."
The cause of raising money for the American Family Children's Hospital hit home for Ritschard. He has a niece who was treated at the American Family Children's Hospital.
"It's a great feeling," Ritschard said. "It's great to see the money go to a great cause. It gives extra meaning for the kids playing. They are raising money for kids in need. I hope this event continues for a long, long time."
Barneveld's Danielle Straubhaar scored a team-high 15 points to lead the East. The West was led by River Ridge's Meagan Herrick who also scored 15 points. Argyle's Jessica Treuthardt added seven points.
In the boys' game, the East rallied from a 10-point deficit by switching to a pressure defense. The West All-Star team was led by Ty Kartman of Cassville who scored a game-high 22 points. Albany's Isaiah Shell scored a team-high 15 points to lead the East. Monticello's Lucas Marty added 14 points. The East had three other players who each added 10 points including Barneveld's Jeremy Whitish, Black Hawk's Seth Butler and Barneveld's Tyler Hellenbrand.
Ritschard also was a fan of adding the 3-point contest.
"It just brought that much more excitement to the atmosphere," he said. "It was a nice wrinkle. I think it was very successful and I hope we do it again next year."
