Setterstrom, Peterson win first matches

MADISON - Silas Setterstrom and Ryan Peterson, both Monroe seniors, picked up their first wins in singles play at the season-opening Madison Memorial Invitational on Saturday.

The Monroe boys tennis team finished last out of four teams at the tournament with three points. Cotter High School of Winona, Minnesota, and Lake Geneva Badger both tied for the team title with seven points followed by La Crosse Aquinas with four points.

Setterstrom at No. 1 singles and Peterson at No. 2 singles each went 1-2. Setterstrom defeated La Crosse Aquinas' Aaron Poent 6-0, 6-0. Peterson knocked off Marc Fortney of La Crosse Aquinas 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 3 singles, Monroe senior Nick Baumann lost two season-opening matches and senior Alex Tordoff lost a three-set match to Fortney at No. 3 singles 5-7, 6-0, 10-8. Quinn Walsh dropped two matches at No. 4 singles.

Monroe's Ross Oxenrider and Jacob Kind at No. 2 doubles went 1-1 and won the only match in doubles for the Cheesemakers. Oxenrider and Kind beat Clayton Prescher and Jack Clements of La Crosse Aquinas 6-3, 6-2.

Nathan Smith and Baumann at No. 1 doubles a match to La Crosse Aquinas' Ryan Scheidt and Connor Roop 6-0, 6-0. Smith and Tordoff at No. 1 doubles also lost a match to Badger's Peter Merry and Sam Ahler 6-0, 6-2. Oxenrider and Kind also lost a match at No. 1 doubles to Cotter's Jeery Yang and Tony Wan 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 3 doubles, the Cheesemakers' Scott Foley and Zeke Frankford lost three matches.
